Lent is meant to be a season of repentance. When Jesus preached he didn’t spend a lot of time on “caring” because he came with a much more urgent message. REPENT! Jesus spoke many words of comfort, but more frequently he challenged his hearers, urging them to turn to God in humility and admit their sins. The more we see the depth of our own sin, the more we see the height of the love God has for us. The companion of repentance is gratitude and an opportunity for joy. We can live our lives grateful for a loving God and responding to that love by loving others. Knowing our own sin, we pray for all sinners, asking God to show them the mercy he has given so abundantly to us.
GOSPEL LESSON: Luke 13:1-9 ….3”I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish”……6Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any. 7So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, “For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on the fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?” 8“Sir,” the man replied, leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. 9If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.”
