          Call To Worship, "Where You There?"    (Rev. Al Boysen-solo)
Invocation and Prayers

Rev. Mark Goble

Hymn of the Day,  "What will you Do With Jesus?"     (Jennifer Wofford & Marilyn Skwor - piano)

Old TestamentHosea 6:1-6  (NIV)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hosea 6

Israel Unrepentant
 1 "Come, let us return to the LORD.
       He has torn us to pieces
       but he will heal us;
       he has injured us
       but he will bind up our wounds.

 2 After two days he will revive us;
       on the third day he will restore us,
       that we may live in his presence.

 3 Let us acknowledge the LORD;
       let us press on to acknowledge him.
       As surely as the sun rises,
       he will appear;
       he will come to us like the winter rains,
       like the spring rains that water the earth."

 4 "What can I do with you, Ephraim?
       What can I do with you, Judah?
       Your love is like the morning mist,
       like the early dew that disappears.

 5 Therefore I cut you in pieces with my prophets,
       I killed you with the words of my mouth;
       my judgments flashed like lightning upon you.

 6 For I desire mercy, not sacrifice,
       and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Old Testament,  Isaiah 53:1-5  (NIV)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Isaiah 53

 1 Who has believed our message
       and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
       and like a root out of dry ground.
       He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
       nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

 3 He was despised and rejected by men,
       a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.
       Like one from whom men hide their faces
       he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

 4 Surely he took up our infirmities
       and carried our sorrows,
       yet we considered him stricken by God,
       smitten by him, and afflicted.

 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
       he was crushed for our iniquities;
       the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
       and by his wounds we are healed.

Offering,  "When They Pierced Your Side"       (Sarah Wofford & Marilyn Skwor - piano)

First WordJohn 19:14-16; Luke 23:32-34  (NIV)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John 19

14 It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour.
      "Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews.

 15 But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!"
      "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked.
      "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered.

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.

Luke 23

 32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."[a] And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

Second WordLuke 23:35-43  (NIV)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luke 23

35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One."

 36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself."

 38 There was a written notice above him, which read:|sc THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

 39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"

 40 But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."

 42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[a]"

 43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

Third WordJohn 19:25-27  (NIV)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John 19

   25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," 27 and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

Fourth WordMatthew 27:45-47  (NIV)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matthew 27

The Death of Jesus
 45 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. 46About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi,[a] lama sabachthani?"—which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"[b]

 47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling Elijah."

Fifth Word Matthew 10:38-42; John 19:28-29  (NIV)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matthew 10

38 Jesus told His disciples anyone  who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

 40 "He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me. 41 Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward."

John 19
The Death of Jesus
 2 8Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sixth WordHebrews 9:11-12,15,27-28; John 19:30  (NIV)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hebrews 9

The Blood of Christ
 11 When Christ came as high priest of the good things that are already here,[a] he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made, that is to say, not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.

 15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

John 19

30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

  1. Hebrews 9:11 Some early manuscripts are to come

Luke 23

Jesus' Death
 44 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 or the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Matthew 27

 54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son[a] of God!"
